Gareth W. Hammond, M.D. specializes in sports medicine and athletic injuries with a particular interest in shoulder, elbow, and knee arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery. He received his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering and Bioengineering with highest honors at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. His medical degree was obtained at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. Dr. Hammond completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of California, Irvine and completed a fellowship in sports medicine and reconstruction of the shoulder and elbow at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. As a fellow, he served as team physician for the University of Southern California Athletic Department, the Pac-10 Basketball Tournament, and NCAA Volleyball Tournament. He has published and presented his research interests which include shoulder biomechanics, ligament reconstruction, blood preservation during total joint replacement, and implant design for shoulder resurfacing.
